Introducing Michael Gardiner
Michael Gardiner is a 4th year university student at Memorial University in Newfoundland and Labrador who traveled to Cameroon with ICA in 2012. Michael was the recipient of the Union of Taxation Employees annual competition, which sponsors a student to travel to Cameroon in order to heighten awareness of international social justice issues.
Currently studying biochemistry, he hopes to go on and study environmental law after completing his undergraduate degree. Michael is also an integral part of his town’s environmental awareness group, the local food bank, Chito-Ryu Karate Dojo, alumni of the Students on Ice program, and is working with ICA to raise funds for the construction of a school in rural Cameroon.
To raise funds, Michael and a group of Memorial and Cona Students in Newfoundland and Labrador have employed a variety of strategies. Through their events such as community BBQ’s, Bingo’s, Basket Draws, and partnerships with local businesses, they have raised the funds required to build a school. Michael has witnessed firsthand how education can change everything and he is committed to being an important part of that change.
International Children’s Awareness would not be successful without the incredible efforts of people like Michael Gardiner.
